Bull Run has hosted Waggle outings over the years and had been a partner with Waggle until it changed hands a handful of years ago.

The course had slowly dropped off the radar for many golfers as service and course conditions became spotty at this once popular track.

Recently BR Investors, LLC announced their purchase of the property and the signing of Raspberry Golf Management (RGM) to a 10 year management contract for the course. RGM currently operates Raspberry Falls and Old Hickory golf courses in Leesburg and Woodbridge. These outstanding “country club for a day” properties are the models for the new Bull Run. The track record of RGM tells us that vast improvements are in store for Bull Run and we look forward to its return to glory.

We will keep you posted!

Bowling Green North provides one of the most affordable eighteen hole courses in the Front Royal. But this is not a cow pasture by any means either. The course even has an island green par three hole!

The sister course is Bowling Green South and is adjacent to the North course. While the South course is good, the North has much more character and is always in very good condition.

If you play Shenandoah Valley Golf Course next door, you get a nice view of the North from one of the tees.

Lots of local outings are played at the North course due to the low pricing for groups, so call ahead to check availability of this popular course.

Using the Waggle Golf Pass on the weekends is a terrific deal for a round of golf and cart. It is well worth the hour drive west of the beltway on a weekend afternoon.

Out for the annual skip over to Penderbrook in hopes that something had changed for the better. The price is still rock bottom (with email specials) and the food is frequently thrown in. But, both the grub and golf are classic “get what you pay for” fare. The pace of play is historically slow. The tenth hole is a 200 plus yard par three over water so you can expect a back up here. The snack bar sits behind the tenth tee so grab a dog while you wait. If a quick golf fix and a full belly are your objective then Penderbrook will do the job. Ayce

One of the best local golf getaways is Ocean City, Maryland in the spring and fall. An abundance of courses at reasonable prices means golfers have lots of choices for their games.

On a mid May trip we ventured over to Ocean Pines, one of our long time favorites. The established community of Ocean Pines has 8,000 homes with much water access to the local OC bay. An active community association supports the residents with concerts, golf, trips, and all types of fun. Seemingly no two homes are alike in this eclectic collection of human expression in architecture. Even the popular storage sheds are carefully manicured to the owners’ tastes. Fortunately for visitors this nice private club offers public play.

The golf course has homes on most of the holes, but none intrude into the aesthetics of your round. Designer Robert Trent Jones put his care into the tract when the community was on the drawing board, so the residences fit nicely into the layout. That does not mean they are not hittable from the tees, however.

Five sets of tees adorn the course, and we recommend you carefully select the proper ones for your skill. Playing this tight tree lined gem from the tips will cost you many Titleists for sure. Think Hilton Head when you step to the first tee before you move to the back tees. Lots of mature overhang trees, canals, ponds, wildlife, and bunkers will give even a single digit handicapper a challenge from the blues.

Course conditions were excellent on our visit. The range was closed for major renovation, but a very nice chipping green was open. The staff was one of the friendliest to be found in the OC area. The bag boys had our clubs as soon as they spotted us, and then regaled us with welcomes and course advice.

Ocean Pines is located in Berlin, Md. Just across from OC near the OC Expressway, Route 90.

What could be better than a quick nine holes with friends before a party to watch the final round of the Masters? The answer might be to have the winner of the Masters play out like the happy ending to a morality play. But we all know about that well publicized gem, so how about some golf course chat.

Oak Marr was the lovely scene for a nine hole walk in the park-like setting managed by Fairfax County. Unlike many par three courses, Oak Marr has sand, water, woods, and elevation changes. While no one hole stands out as a #17 at TPC Sawgrass, the holes offer enough challenge to sharpen your skills. Bring your sticks as the average hole length is over 160 yards from the blue tees, with one hole playing over 200 yards.

Pace of play is well regulated so expect to breeze around the loop in under two hours for sure. We made it in one and a half hours!

The practice facility is one of the best around. A large decked driving range is well paired with perhaps the largest practice green in the area. It even has a bunker.

Play Oak Marr after work and take advantage of the offer in your Waggle Golf Pass.

Ever run into an awkward kid from your high school days only to find that now they are an interesting person? For me that was the case this month for a golf course… the Ospreys at Belmont Bay. Having not played the course in at least five years, I bit the bullet to go see what possible changes could have been made to a course that had a lot working against it on my last visits. No use digging up the past, as any problems are now just that… in the past. A newly designed par 70 shot makers layout seems far from civilization with wonderful views of the Potomac yet is conveniently close to Route 1 & I-95 in Woodbridge.

As you approach the course the new residential development of condos and town houses will surprise and impress you. Fields and marshlands have been replaced by residences that brought an “I could live here” reaction to my lips as I got out of the car. The facility is managed by Billy Casper with all of its customary excellent customer service. The new clubhouse is now comparison to the old temporary one of years past. But, most importantly the course is TERRIFIC. It is a well maintained new design that places a premium on intelligent shot making. If you resist the urge to blast away, your scores will be rewarded. Bring your driver out too many times… and I hope you brought some extra balls. The distance of the course looks short only on the score card, so choose your tees wisely.

I have no complaints about my new friend the Ospreys, and I even drew a random foursome of great partners. It seems like there are a lot of weekday regulars who have discovered this gem. Discover it for yourself, and bring your Waggle Golf Pass so that the fee is only $25!

Primland Golf Course Meadows of Dan, VA – 9/6/2009
Four of us journeyed from Maryland to Meadows of Dan, Virginia on 9/5/09 to experience the Primland Resort and its Highland Golf Course. We had booked a room at Whitetail Lodge (4 bedrooms, living room, kitchen and an unbelievable view of the valley and Blue Ridge) for $650.00 (this entitled us to a $25.00 per person discount on green fees). After an evening of adult beverages and fine food we settled in to watch Alabama – Virginia Tech (we were only 75 miles or so from Blacksburg). In the morning we once again filled our bellies with fine food and headed to the golf course for our 8:20 tee time (there was only one other group booked for the day) and after a bit of time on the range we were led to the first tee by the head pro who took our picture, explained the local rules and wished us luck. The course is just beautiful (though a bit scary on the tee blocks) and the greens were rolling at an 11.5. We never saw another golfer, never saw an unfilled divot or an unrepaired mark on the greens. The place is pristine. We all shot a few strokes over our handicaps and felt a little bit beat-up but the free lunch after our round eased us into our 6 hour return ride home. I know I will go back next year to play it again and take advantage of the reasonable replay rates. If you can afford it, it is a must stay and play. Butch L.

Algonkian Regional Park & Golf Course Sterling, VA – 8/31/2009
Algonkian is a course that I had not frequented recently due to my bias against their seemingly incessant wet conditions. It is a not secret that this fine layout had a problem. Great news! The problem has been fixed. Bermuda fairways were put in place two years ago and they are really coming in nicely. The entire course looked terrific on a recent visit, with even the staff seeming to take pride in the new turf. I love it as a golfer to find a new course, and playing “the new” Algonkian provided that little rush. Also, the deer have declared the course as theirs. If you enjoy wildlife, this is a course for you. Algonkian gets plenty of play but is well marshaled so check it out if you haven’t recently. Now if I could just get those white tee boxes up about 300 yards Ayce

Bull Run is back! Well, sort of back. Given the massive rains of the spring it could be said that you would have to TRY to make a course look bad this year. At Bull Run they appear to be trying to do the opposite as positive changes in the poor conditions of two years ago are very noticeable. Despite the fine weather, we saw few other golfers during our delightful day on the course. It could be that the owners have not become aware of promotions to make golf more affordable, promotions that seem to be filling their competitors courses. Overall, we enjoyed a spectacular day of low humidity for our small (15) group outing at this once very popular course. Ayce

Reston National Golf Course Reston, VA – 7/9/2009
Arriving mid morning on a Thursday at Reston National, you might be expecting a lull in the golf action. To do so would be a miscalculation at this busy facility. A group of men were finishing an early tournament, the ladies league was just going out, the 50 kids in the junior camp were rotating to their stations, and the public golfers were filling in the limited gaps. This well run course always seems to be thriving with a variety of activities, not to mention the numerous outings like the full field DC United Soccer tournament on a Thursday no less. Course conditions were in their usual good mode, save for just a tinge of dryness setting in due to a week of no rain. This typically long-playing course was friendlier due to the extra roll on the fairways. I really enjoy playing this place, as apparently do a lot of other golfers. The practice facility bustles with golfers at all hours. Be sure to call ahead to check on play status, but be sure to get to Reston National this season. Ayce
