If you love Philly cheese steaks, I mean REAL Philly Cheese Steaks, then you must check out Philly Style Steaks & Subs in Norfolk, Virginia.
We were headed back from a quick trip to Virginia Beach and on I-64 hit a 9 mile backup to the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel. We decided to grab some grub to avoid starvation while waiting in traffic. The next exit was Tidewater Drive so we took it. Our first impression was that we made a mistake – the area is kinda run down and didn’t immediately look promising.
But just down the road on the right we saw a sign for Philly Steaks. As soon as we walked in I knew it was gonna be good!
Philly Style Steaks and Subs has burgers and subs on the menu but the cheese steaks are the main attraction. The walls of this tiny restaurant are plastered floor to ceiling with Philadelphia news and memorabilia. And the authentic cheesesteaks are straight out of 9th and Passyunk ala Pat’s or Geno’s.
Sometimes you just get lucky and find an amazing place. The cheese steaks reminded me of my time in Philly and were just the treat I needed to get back into that 9 mile backup.
If you’re cruising by Tidewater Drive on I-64 be sure to stop by. I’m already planning my next golf trip to that area just so I can visit them again!
