Righty Enjoying Whitetail

Recently Waggle ventured up to Whitetail Golf Resort in Pennsylvania to meet up with our new Harrisburg correspondent Righty.  We decided to sneak in a round of golf at one of my very favorite places to play on our way to the WVU/MD football game.  Whitetail is located in Mercersburg PA, just north of Exit 19 Clearspring off I-70 and only a little over an hour from the Washington and Baltimore metro areas.

Righty a.k.a. Notorious H.B.G. is Lefty’s brother and an avid golfer in the Harrisburg area.  We decided to test his skills by letting him write about our round.  So without further adieu, here is Righty’s first course report for Waggle.com…

“I met up with my brother Lefty and fellow Waggle cohort Bogeyman on our way to a wild and wonderful West Virginia football game for a stop at Whitetail for an enjoyable afternoon of golf.

We arrived a little after noon and Rich (director of golf Rich Hogan) and his staff expertly accommodated us to get us on since they had a small outing occupying the course. We ended up playing the 18 and then had to play a couple of extra “tie breaker” holes and ended the day near dark.

Located next to the Whitetail ski resort in Mercersburg, PA near Hagerstown, Md. this course is definitely a home run. The course layout combined with views of the mountains is a thing of beauty.  Makes you feel good to be upright and hitting the little white ball with a couple of fellow golf aficionados.

Playing from the whites (6400 yards) we got our licks in and the course fought back hard.  The course has many ups and downs, rights and lefts and is fair and enjoyable to play. You definitely need to play smart (one of my many downfalls) and hit some shots although there is also plenty of opportunity to grip and rip (my favorite kind of play).  It was in very good condition considering the lack of rain this area has experienced this summer.  I thought the greens were excellent and true.

My most enjoyable hole of course was the down hill par 4 number 11 where an impromptu long drive contest broke out which I won handily although the final result is in a very big dispute due to several technicalities – which has nothing to do with the course BTW.

Back to the business at hand – the clubhouse is currently a temporary building as a new clubhouse will be built and should be up and running on April 1st.  Rich is excited about the upcoming new digs and also excited about the course condition – which well he should be.

Afterward we experienced a wild time in Morgantown where the Mountaineers and John Denver beat up on the Terps.  After the game and tailgating we all ended up at Mario’s Fishbowl for some adult beverages – but that is another story altogether.”

Well… we think Righty nailed the review.  It was a great day of golf on a beautiful course.  And, Whitetail by the way is a spectacular place to golf in the Fall (nudge, nudge, wink, wink – book that tee time soon).  Bogeyman and Lefty continue to give this track “two thumbs up” and we’re already looking forward to our next trip to Whitetail AND reports on the Harrisburg golf scene from Righty.
